When a utility pole is installed in service, the treatment used provides protection to the pole for some time. The preservative treatment is either water-borne or oil-borne and the preservative retention level declines as a gradient from the outer sapwood to the sapwood/ heartwood interface. Heartwood penetration is usually minimal. Wood poles in service naturally weather, which leads to checking and cracking of the pole. Over time these checks deepen and may extend beyond the effective preservative barrier, exposing the less protected interior of the pole to moisture ingress and a succession of microorganisms, which leads to decay, and, occasionally, insect attack. Protection of the inner sapwood and heartwood of poles cannot be effectively achieved by the application of treatment chemicals or wraps to the surface of poles. However, the use of Cobra™ Rods inserted into test holes (1/2” minimum diameter) during a normal test and treat program provides an effective and environmentally benign treatment for this vulnerable inner region of poles in service.

Cobra™ Rods are fused rods made from borate chemistries and copper hydroxide. Both borates and copper ions are both effective against wood decay fungi, and the presence of both provides an effective treatment for internal decay that can develop in poles over time. When the moisture level inside the pole increases to the level necessary to the development of decay, the Cobra™ Rods begin to dissolve with release of both borate and copper ions, and the solubilized ions diffuse through the internal decay zone with the moisture and thus can control the various fungal species that are present.
